The process of extrusion has numerous types, and one of them is often known as plastic extrusion. In this method, raw plastic is used and transformed to create various items like rods, seals, plastic tubing, adhesive tape and plastic sheets by using tools like plastic extruders.

Some of the most commonly used plastic materials in plastic extrusion are nylon, polycarbonate, acetal, polyethylene, ABS or acrylonitrile butadiene styrene and acrylic.

What are the types of plastic extrusion?

    1. Blown film extrusion

This process is used when you wish to manufacture plastic films to make shopping bags and objects like that. It is generally like an ordinary extrusion except for the die. In this technique, the die used is like an upright cylinder that has a round opening that can be as small as a couple of centimeters in diameter to as big as minimum three meters. One advantage of this method is the quality variations it can provide.

    2. Sheet or film extrusion

In this process, the materials are cooled by pulling them through a number of cooling rolls. They are also able to achieve the desired surface texture and sheet thickness via this method. A process that follows this specific extrusion technique is called thermoforming, in which a sheet is open to heat until it turns into soft plastic so that you can mold it into any shape. But, if you're going to use vacuum when doing this, the method is called vacuum forming.

    3. Tubing extrusion

In this process, plastic extruders are used to create tubes like medical tubing and drinking straws. It is also like standard extrusion except for the die. In this case, a mandrel or pin is used to extrude hollow sections. You can use one or a few die depending on the number of lumens or holes necessary.

    4. Compound extrusion

This method uses one or a combination of several polymers to create plastic compounds. You may use powder, liquid or pellets as feeds for injection molding and extrusion. Machinery are extremely helpful if you decide to use this technique. You may get those little laboratory machines or those large extruders found in big industries.

Those are just four of the lots of extrusion processes known these days. They have developed and improved over the years. Each of them has its own advantages and disadvantages over the others. Each also requires different sorts of equipment..
